What Is Core Aeration?

Core aeration uses a machine with hollow tines to pull small plugs of soil out of your lawn. Those open channels let water, oxygen, and fertilizer reach the root zone instead of pooling or running off the compacted surface. The plugs break down on their own within a couple weeks.

Why Aerate in Northern Colorado?

Our soil is notorious for heavy clay content, especially east of I-25. Foot traffic, dog runs, kids, and summer dryness all compact the surface, and compacted soil is where lawns go to die. Your grass looks tired, bare patches spread, and no amount of watering seems to help. Aeration fixes the underlying cause.

Best Time to Aerate

For cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass (the most common lawn type around here), the best windows are early fall (late August to mid-October) and early spring (late March to late April). Fall is usually the better call in Colorado because it pairs well with fall fertilization and gives roots time to recover before winter.

Aeration + Overseeding

The single best thing you can do for a patchy lawn is aerate and overseed on the same visit. The core holes give seed a perfect place to nest, and the exposed soil gets better germination than a broadcast overseed on top of compacted turf. Brad can quote the combo as one job.
